How to behave with an adoptee-some things not to say or do

Adoption is a unique phenomenon; both the adopting family and the child being adopted have some expectations from each other. However, for the adopting family, there are certain things to keep in mind, and avoid while they interact with an adoptee. Factors like the age, maturity level and the development of the relationship play an important part in the interactions. Here are some things to be careful about;

Avoid using the term “real” while referring to the family members

There is no unreal or real relationship. Every relationship is real. This, the child may not know or understand at the outset, but it is an important thing to convey at the earliest. Adopting families may get slightly confused when the adoptee talks, in these cases it is best to ask them to speak of their family members in the first person basis.

“You were chosen”

Although this phrase is used lovingly by the adopting family, it leaves the child confused. Young children think in absolute and concrete terms and may not have learnt to think in abstract terms. The adopted child will be left wondering how they arrived into the world if they were not born like every other person. This is something to avoid.

How much did it cost for the adoption?

This is a very basic and tacky thing to avoid at all costs. It takes money, hundreds of dollars to bring a child into the world. And for adoption, the cost often runs into thousands of dollars. It really does not matter how much the adoption process cost. Regardless of the amount of money involved, all children are very valuable. Show that in your words and actions.

“Your mother loved you such a great deal she gave you up for adoption”

This is undoubtedly one of the most confusing things to ever tell an adoptee. It does not help in the least bit for them to know that they were born in impoverished conditions and does nothing to improve their self-esteem in the long run. In addition, for some adoptees, their biological mother really did not know what affection and motherly love is all about. Because of their selfishness and promiscuity, they let their children into the world and suffrage follows. There’s no point in delving very deep in these angles of the adoption story.
